May 8: Vera Brosgol at Politics and Prose

I'm planning on attending tonight.

Vera Brosgol - Plain Jane and The Mermaid - at Conn Ave

Upcoming Event

About the Book:

In a world that values appearance, Jane has always felt overlooked. After losing her inheritance as well as her parents, she proposes to the vain, but dashing Peter. When he is kidnapped by a nefarious mermaid, she is determined to bring him home. With the help of a mysterious crone and a grumpy seal, can Jane prove to herself, and others, that beauty is only skin deep? Vera Brosgol's newest graphic novel Plain Jane and the Mermaid will sweep readers into a dangerous underwater world.

About the Author:

Vera Brosgol was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1984 and moved to the United States when she was five. Her first two graphic novels, Anya's Ghost and Be Prepared, were published by First Second, and her debut picture book Leave Me Alone! was a 2017 Caldecott Honor Book. She's also worked on storyboards for several animated films, including Coraline and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her dog Omar, a mere two hours from the sea.

WaPo comic, “Searching for Maura," finalist for Pulitzer

The Washington Post wins three Pulitzer Prizes

A series on the AR-15's cultural and political impact won for national reporting. Imprisoned columnist Vladimir Kara-Murza and editorial writer David Hoffman were also honored. The New York Times also won three prizes, and the New Yorker won two.

"Another finalist, in the illustrated reporting and commentary category, was "Searching for Maura," a beautifully rendered visual telling of the story of an 18-year-old Suyoc Igorot woman from the Philippines who died after coming to the United States to be put on display at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. After she died, a portion of her brain was taken by the director of physical anthropology at the Smithsonian Institution's U.S. National Museum, who used human body parts to test his theories about biological differences between races."

Fantom Comics FCBD photos

They had a great crowd apparently. It was still a line going out the door when I got there after lunch. Since before Covid, Fantom has been providing a complete set of FCBD comics for the Library of Congress; I've taken over collecting them. Here's a few shots I took.

Pin the Bow Tie on Buster Brown game heading to the Library of Congress

I picked up this cloth game over the weekend at a flea market. It's 119 years old, according to the ad that someone on the Platinum Comics history list found for me.

For modern parents who think merchandising of comics and cartoon characters are something new - nope! When characters such as Ally Sloper in the UK, and Yellow Kid, Buster Brown, and Foxy Grandpa in the US got a following in print, merchandising followed.

The Morning Call Wed Oct 18 1905

I don't know when the Library will get this cataloged but it'll be in the Prints and Photos division as of this week. Here's a few details.

Some more recent material was handed over too including the print edition of the 2023 Comics Research Bibliography, a complete set of 2024 Free Comic Book Day comics, and these gems.

From Artomatic, this print of tattooed Kewpies amused me, but I can't find the artist's name at the moment.

Life on Other Worlds, a 1978 portfolio I saw on Heritage  auctions that I was curious about so I bought it on e-bay for much less. The art by Al Williamson, Walt Simonson, Paul Gulacy, Howard Chaykin and P. Craig Russell is fine, but only Williamson's is accomplished.

And this has nothing to do with comics, but was a lovely steel engraving bookplate from Virginia Otis to add to the collection they already have.

Why are housing prices in America so high? "Supply and demand" is true but misleading, because draconian regulation drastically constricts housing supply. In this exciting new nonfiction graphic novel, economist Bryan Caplan makes the economic and philosophical case for radical deregulation of the housing industry. Deregulation turns out to be a bona fide panacea: a large rise in housing supply would raise living standards, reduce inequality, increase social mobility, promote economic growth, reduce homelessness, increase birth rates, help the environment, and more. Combining stunning visuals and careful interdisciplinary research, Build, Baby, Build takes readers to a world where people are free to build―and shows us how to get there.

Reception to follow.

Build, Baby, Build: The Science and Ethics of Housing Regulation

In Build, Baby, Build: The Science and Ethics of Housing Regulation, economist Bryan Caplan makes the economic and philosophical case for radical deregulation of this massive market―freeing property owners to build as tall and dense as they wish. Not only would the average price of housing be cut in half, but the building boom unleashed by deregulation would simultaneously reduce inequality, increase social mobility, promote economic growth, reduce homelessness, increase birth rates, and help the environment. It's surprising then, that despite all these benefits, housing deregulation is universally unpopular with policymakers.
